Main Streets are more than just commercial centers; they are the “third places” where the heart of a community beats. But how can we make a place feel truly welcoming to everyone? How can programs and events develop a community’s commitment to their place and to each other? Why is doing this important? And what can we do if we’re just getting started (and don’t have a budget)?

Discuss these questions and more with C.J. Opperthauser, Executive Director of Friends of Congress Square Park in downtown Portland, ME,  regional leader in the placemaking world, and former Grow Smart RI Director of Placemaking. He’ll share his experiences over the past 5 years managing and programming a small urban public space that now boasts over 200 events each year (in every season) and has become a true center of community activity. He’ll address common challenges and provide actionable steps anyone can take to start offering opportunities for communities to connect in public spaces – whether they’re on, along, or adjacent to a Main Street district. (Here’s a hint: it might have something to do with s’mores…!)
