Made By All: Warming Up to Winter Placemaking
PROJECT FOR PUBLIC SPACES WEBINAR

Thursday December 5, 2024
12:00 noon – 1:00 PM

For our December Roundtable, we’re excited to partner with Project for Public Spaces in offering access to their webinar exploring Winter Placemaking: “Made By All: Warming Up to Winter Placemaking”.

Winter Placemaking Webinar

As shared by PPS: Reimagine your winter landscapes in this webinar on winter placemaking for public spaces. We’ll explore fun, innovative strategies in enhancing community engagement and experience during the chilliest months of the year. Draw inspiration from cities that are transforming their public areas into vibrant, welcoming environments with outdoor activities, social gatherings, and seasonal celebrations—despite the cold! Our expert panel will share insights on the unique challenges and opportunities that winter brings and highlight case studies of communities that have turned their public spaces into lively wintry hubs.

ALWAYS REMEMBER: This is Incremental Work.

Our most valued takeaway from the Winter Placemaking webinar came to us from David Cowan of the Downtown Detroit Partnership. He showed us two images of their winter “Lodge” pop-up bar in Detroit’s Cadillac Square Park. The first iteration was built out of a simple tent with donated materials as they didn’t have the money for anything more.

Instead, they made a proof of concept and kept on improving it over time. As they proved their concept, they grew their funds. David reminded us that this is incremental work and to “JUST START SOMEWHERE.” The two pictures above are courtesy of David.
