Making a Positive Difference in their Neighborhood

We heard from South Providence Health Equity Zone (HEZ) resident volunteers Dawn Sumner and Darlene Hazard about how they successfully advocated for pedestrian safety corrections along Broad Street.

During the 2022 installation of the Broad Street Urban Trail, which included a parking-separated bike lane and bus islands where pedestrians could safely get on and off buses, the bus-stop signs had not been relocated as part of the city-led project. This created confusion about where passengers should approach the bus. Doing so where the bus-stop signs were located put passengers in harms way.

Dawn and Darlene participated in a previous workshop, and armed with new knowledge about process and responsible parties, they got action from city officials in relocating the bus-stop signs to where they were intended to go.
